Code, permits and rebates

Maryland requires EPA Section 608 certification for anyone handling refrigerant, and refrigerant recovery is not optional — venting is a federal violation. If your system still runs on R-22, replacement parts and refrigerant are both scarce and expensive across the DC-Maryland market; we will price the repair honestly against a replacement rather than sell you a charge that leaks out by August. Montgomery County does not require a permit for a straight repair, but does for equipment replacement, and we handle that filing.

MD HVACR Contractor License #01-XXXXX. All refrigerant handling is performed by EPA Section 608 certified technicians, and equipment replacement is permitted and inspected through the county.

  1. Triage on the phone

  2. Airflow first

    Filter, coil, blower wheel, return path. A blocked evaporator coil mimics almost every expensive failure mode on the list, and in tree-canopied neighborhoods like Takoma Park and Sligo Park Hills, cottonwood and pollen load coils fast.

  3. Refrigerant circuit and electrical

    Charge is verified by superheat or subcooling against the manufacturer's target, never by pressure alone. Capacitors are tested with a meter, not judged by appearance — a bulged cap is obvious, a capacitor that has drifted from 45 to 31 microfarads is not.

  4. Repair or honest replacement math

    You get the repair cost, the remaining realistic life of the system, and the replacement cost side by side. On an R-22 system with a leaking coil, that conversation usually goes one direction, and we will say so plainly.

We do not publish a single number, because a number without your house attached to it is marketing rather than information. These are the variables that actually decide what a job costs, and we itemise all of them in writing before any work begins.

Which component failed

A run capacitor or contactor is a modest repair. A compressor, an evaporator coil or a variable-speed inverter board on a premium system sits at the other end of the range, and on older equipment often exceeds the sensible-repair threshold.

Refrigerant type

R-22 has not been produced or imported in the United States since 2020, and reclaimed supply is expensive. Charging an R-22 system with a known leak is money spent on a system that is already end-of-life. R-410A and the newer A2L refrigerants are far less painful.

Timing

Standard-hours diagnostics cost less than a 9pm emergency call in a heat advisory. We publish both rates before we dispatch, and we do not invent an overtime rate mid-visit.

My AC is running but the house will not cool below 78. What is wrong?
On a 95-degree day, a correctly sized system typically holds about 20 degrees below outdoor temperature, so 75 is a realistic floor for many homes. If you are stuck at 78 with the unit running constantly, the usual causes are a dirty evaporator coil, low refrigerant charge from a leak, a failing capacitor letting the compressor short-cycle, or duct losses in a hot attic. All four are measurable.
There is ice on my refrigerant line. Should I keep running it?
No. Shut the cooling off, leave the fan on to melt the ice, and change the filter. Ice means the coil is running below freezing — from restricted airflow or low charge — and running a compressor while liquid refrigerant floods back to it is how a repairable problem becomes a compressor replacement.
How fast can you get here on a no-cool call?
We hold same-day emergency capacity through cooling season and prioritize households with infants, elderly residents or medical needs. During a regional heat advisory the whole market is saturated, so we are straight with you about arrival windows rather than promising two hours and showing up at nine.
Is it worth repairing a 14-year-old air conditioner?
It depends on the part and the refrigerant. A $250 capacitor on a 14-year-old R-410A system is worth doing. A $2,400 evaporator coil on an R-22 system is not — you would be investing in equipment that cannot be economically recharged for the rest of its life.
